Connexions, Sunderland

Connexions Sunderland provide confidential information advice and guidance for all 13-19 year olds (and up to age 25 for young people with special needs) on a wide range of lifestyle issues including education, training, careers, employment, health and personal development opportunities.
All young people with special needs - those with any kind of disability including physical, learning, communication, sensory, behavioural, rare disorders and young people who have health conditions will have a named Connexions Personal Adviser from Year 9 onwards. Personal Advisers are linked to each secondary school.
In addition to the above, there is a dedicated Learning Disabilities and /or Difficulties (LDD) Team of 5 Personal Adviser's who work in Schools for pupils with Special Educational Needs.
Personal Advisers will get to know individual young people and parents and offer appropriate information and guidance on the range of options post 16. Personal Advisers will attend Transition Review Meetings in Year 9 and subsequent reviews. They will be involved in drawing up a Transition Plan and will have responsibility for overseeing its delivery, offering support at each stage of transition to identify future support needs.

The Engagement, Support and Prevention 2 (ESP 2) project based in Connexions aims to increase young people’s participation in learning through locally defined interventions focussing on:-
The project complements existing provision by targeting services towards young people in need of additional help offering a choice of Accredited Courses and Non Accredited support.
ESP 2 is primarily focussed on the 17-19 age cohort and includes a Supported Apprenticeship programme and a range of partners including, Springboard, Sunderland College, SAFC Foundation, Sunderland Futures and eight organisations from the voluntary sector.
Delivery includes both Accredited and Non Accredited courses and target groups include young people with LDD, offenders or ex offenders, young carers, young parents and young people in or leaving care .The project also has two Project Workers working across the city, directly supporting young people via recruitment, referrals and delivery.

- Provision to support progression into mainstream learning
- Work to prevent young people disengaging
- Support for young people during periods of transition
- Work to re-engage those young people who are not in employment, education or training.
