Volunteer Centre, Sunderland

Picture
Volunteer Centre Sunderland was established in 1973 as a registered charity and is a local voluntary organisation that exists to promote, support and develop volunteering in Sunderland, Washington, Houghton and Hetton areas.

The Centre actively recruits volunteers from all sections of the community and places them with local voluntary organisations who are seeking volunteers to help with their work. It also supports and advises these organisations on good practice when working with volunteers.

The Centre holds a Quality Mark awarded by the national umbrella body

Volunteering England to show that it meets its 6 core functions. It recognises the Centre's achievement in meeting the criteria for Quality Accreditation and confirms that it fully meets the requirements of a Volunteer Development Agency.

The Volunteer Mentoring Project, funded by the National Lottery, aims to make volunteering more open and accessible to as many local people as possible.  The Project works with people living in Sunderland who may not be able to volunteer independently due to:

  • language barriers
  • sensory impairment
  • low confidence or self esteem
  • a learning disability
  • a physical disability
  • sensory impairment
  • mental ill health etc.

Suitable individuals will be given support from the Project’s staff and will be matched to a Volunteer Mentor who will work with them on a one to one basis and support them into a suitable volunteering opportunity.  Mentors will support these individuals until they feel they are ready to progress to independent volunteering.
